The mission of Advocates for Social Justice (ASJ)  is to provide a structure to support engagement with social justice activities.  We are very excited about  trying something new this year.  ASJ will be sponsoring a “Full Community Social Justice Assembly” for all ages after service on Oct. 16, starting at 11:45 a.m.  More details to follow in future communications via email.

We need your time and talents to help make this first assembly a success.  This is an all ages event, so we are seeking both youth and adult volunteers.  Most volunteer opportunities involve 30-90 minutes of time on Oct. 16.

With election season upon us, our first assembly will be a mock debate and mock election on the major issues (not candidates).  There are a wide variety of volunteer opportunities:

Debate facilitator & Timekeeper (45 minutes on Oct 16)

Debators (6) – will have 5 minutes to present a pro or con on the following topics:

  • I-735 WAmend – Overturning Citizens United
  • I-732  CarbonWA
  • I-1433  Minimum Wage

Food coordinator (1)

Sound Engineer (1)

Set-up Crew (4)

Clean-up Crew (4)

Poll Workers and  ballot counters (4)

Facilitators to lead small group discussion – (3 for combined adult / junior youth / senior youth)

Facilitators to lead small group discussion for K-5 (2)

Creative Coordinator (1 or more) – make ballot boxes, voter IDs and ballots (this work would be done at your convenience prior to Oct 16)

Coordinator for hands-on activities for kids and adults (ASJ will provide materials and activities – you just monitor.  Prefer someone with previous experience with K-5 kids)

Don’t be shy.  Help us have a GREAT event.  Contact Leslie Schmidt by Oct. 2 to let us know where your talents could best be utilized.   Contact Leslie if you have any questions.
