“Of the people, by the people and for the people” is an expression coined by a Unitarian (Theodore Parker). Use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large is an article of our faith; it’s our Fifth UU Principle. Yet, our political processes seem to be controlled by billionaires rather than the people. As we prepare for another election season it may be helpful to review some of the spiritual assumptions that undergird any functioning democracy. What at the heart of democracy needs healing and how might we serve as healers?
