As the COVID team has adjusted the required safety measures for gatherings, it has now become possible to have potlucks in the sanctuary the way we did before the pandemic. "We [Still] Do Not Have to Think Alike to Love Alike”: Reflections on Evolution in Our Unitarian Universalist Faith Tradition.
- John Hilke

In my talk, I will sketch some of the past contentious times in U.S. Unitarian Universalist circles, including some during my several decades of active involvement in UU congregations. One of my conclusions from these stories and documents is that evolution is not only our part of Unitarian Universalist tradition, but critical to it. Without this evolution, many current UUs would find UUism pretty antiquated and narrow. The quote above from Francis David (1520 – 1579), King John Sigismund’s court preacher, is proof that even from the earliest days of Unitarianism, some key leaders understood that the Unitarian faith (and articulations of that faith) should evolve as our understanding of the world and cosmos evolves. Indeed, Francis David died because he would not agree to freeze Unitarian theology in its 16th century form. Hosea Balou took a similar stance in turning back efforts to create a Universalist binding creed in the late 18th and early 19th century.
