April 13 Town Hall Discussion on Recycling at WUUC

April 13 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

With Board support, the Building and Grounds Committee recently terminated WUUC’s recycling contract with Waste Management. This decision has proven to be controversial, and so on Sunday, April13, there will be a town hall discussion in the sanctuary following the service.

The purpose will be to see if members feel strongly enough about reinstating recycling through Waste Management to pay the $100 per month cost and whether there is sufficient volunteer support to make that recycling meaningful, so that only items which are actually recyclable go into the recycling bin.

We used to have multiple bins for different categories of waste; they were located near the back entrance to the church. There were more bags of trash from the church and the dayschool than would fit in the bin for trash, so those that didn’t fit were either put in any bin that had space or were left in a pile on the ground. We now have a dumpster which is farther from the back entrance and has considerably greater capacity; it is also much heavier and more secure. The bins were periodically tipped over by animals, creating an enormous mess.

The April 13 discussion will assess member views on the subject. At that time, additional information will be presented, including about recycling currently being done by members who take recyclable materials home.
