The Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (Adult and Youth) was developed by Milton Bennett (Portland State) as a way for people to understand and build cultural competency. What Rev. Lois likes about this model is that it is grounded in the premise that being comfortable and able to function in cultures other than our own is like many other things, developmental. It is not a model blamed on shame or guilt and asserts that all of us, regardless of race or ethnicity, have work to do when it comes to cultural competency.

Bennett has come with 5 stages that describe where people are in the process of developing “cultural competency.” The workshop I am leading on Saturday, September 23, is an introduction to the model. It is not pure lecture but has exercises to accompany each stage that help us understand them more thoroughly.
