Each year, the UUA designates a book as the year’s “common read.” The idea is to suggest that many of us UUs read something that helps us understand the issues of our day.  This year’s common read is The Third Reconstruction by Rev. Dr. William Barber.  Rev.  Barber is, among other things, the main organizer of North Carolina’s “Moral Mondays.”  He tells an interesting and instructive story. 

You are invited to read the book and to join in a study group at church, facilitated by Rev. Jamil Scott.   

The group will meet on Wednesday evenings, March 8, 22 and 29 in Portable 2

Sign up below.  We need six participants for the group  to “make.”  The Third Reconstruction is available from the UUA Bookstore, now called inspirit www.uua.org/bookstore, has been chosen as the 2016-17 Unitarian Universalist Common Read. Unitarian Universalists were electrified at General Assembly 2016 by Rev. Barber’s call for building and sustaining a movement for justice for all people. The Common Read selection committee believes that this is a moment for Unitarian Universalists to answer that call. The Third Reconstruction offers helpful, practical guidance for engaging with justice movements born in response to local experiences of larger injustices. Drawing on the prophetic traditions of the Jewish and Christian scriptures, while making room for other sources of truth, the book challenges us to ground our justice work in moral dissent, even when there is no reasonable expectation of political success, and to do the hard work of coalition building in a society that is fractured and polarized.
