WUUC Poetry: Michael Magee: Poetry Without Borders

September 11, 2022 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Poetry Without Borders opens physical, spiritual, geographical, poetical, and social landscapes for the writer to explore. As a launching point to your borderless poem, talk to a stranger. Or collect exchanges from some other casual meeting, real or imagined. It could be with a personality, a writer, or an artist. Maybe someone you’d like to talk to, but don’t. What would you say to them? The task is to have a conversation with a stranger, someone you meet in a coffee shop, work, etc. During or after the conversation, make notes to yourself as best you can–doesn’t have to be verbatim–snatches of dialogue, images, a start and an end–even if it goes nowhere! Place it in a setting. Don’t limit it to poetry–this work could also be prose or simply dialogue: Write what you said and what you thought you heard them say. It doesn’t need to be polished at all. Rough draft is fine. Treat it as a work in progress.

Optional Homework Ahead of Time

Think about Poetry Without Borders. Bring your thoughts to the workshop as a starting point. After going over an example or two as a group, we’ll look at each person’s “homework” and how to give this unstructured work a frame.
