Dear WUUC Community,
“Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going?”
This year we will undergo a year-long process to explore, understand, and determine our Mission, Vision, and Covenant. Churches typically revisit these statements every 5 years; it’s been 10 for WUUC. In doing this work, we will better understand ourselves and provide direction for church goals, directives, and internal decision making. It will also clarify who we are and what we stand for to the broader community.
As a first step in the process, please fill out this short survey to allow the Mission & Vision Task Force to gather initial input and to get everyone thinking. The survey closes Oct. 25. If you would prefer to fill out a paper survey, please find copies in the church foyer.
Over the coming year, WUUC plans to revisit its Mission, Vision and Covenant with lots of input from congregational members and friends. It’s been 10 years since we created the last version and a lot has changed in the world and our community since then. This work will help guide our planning, decisions making, and how we conduct ourselves together.
- Mission – “Why does this congregation exist in the world?” What holds the church together. How WUUC uniquely fulfills its purpose.
- Vision – What WUUC must become to continue fulfilling its purpose. “What is the future we hope for and dream for in the congregation?”
- Covenant – How we will live and work together. It takes the place of a creed in other religious communities.
The first step is a broad congregational survey offered to anyone. We will then host a series of larger and small group discussions for more detailed input. Drafts will then be shred for review. And finally, the congregational will have an opportunity to vote on the final version. The initial plan looks something like this (the working group will provide regular updates as we progress through the plan).
Launch and Orientation (Sept–Nov 2026) – Announce work. Begin engagement through a survey and large group discussion.
Listening and Discovery (Jan–Mar 2027) – Reach diverse congregational communities for in-depth discussion.
Synthesis (Mar–April 2027) – Combine insights and perspectives.
Draft Statements (April–May 2027) – Create draft versions for exploration.
Try Them On (June–Sept 2027) – Test and evaluate proposed statements.
Congregational Feedback (Sept 2027) – Listen and refine based on congregational input.
Final Draft and Vote (Oct 2027) – Present the final statements for approval.
